History

Physics Association on March 27, 1950 in Istanbul, at the Building of Teachers Association in Çemberlitaş, Sait AKPINAR, Cahit ARF, Hilmi BENEL, Ali Rıza BERKEM, Ratip BERKER, İlhami CIVAOĞLU, Kerim ERİM, Nusret KÜRKÇÜOĞLU, Celal SARAÇ, Adnan SOKULLU, Sadrettin TUNAK, It was founded by the leading scientists of our country, consisting of Salih Murat UZDİLEK and Fahir YENİÇAY. At the first board of directors, President Fahir YENİÇAY, Vice President Ali Rıza BERKEM and General Secretary Cavid ENER. Fahir YENİÇAY, who is the president of the establishment, has been the president and main walker of the association for almost 25 years. Only when Fahir YENİÇAY went to Switzerland for treatment between 1952-1954, Ali Rıza BERKEM chaired for two years. In these first twenty-five years, the main activity of the members of the association was to listen to a researcher's speech, to discuss the research results and to have a conversation by drinking tea at the meeting held at Istanbul University Faculty of Science General Physics on the last Friday of every month. One month before the meeting, the summary of the communiqué was printed in both Turkish and a foreign language in a two-page newsletter and this newsletter was posted to the members of the association. It is a fact that these meetings, where an original research was explained at that time, served as an important pioneer.

Erdal İNÖNÜ (President), Turgay TÜRKELİ (Treasurer), Metin SUBAŞI, Altan FERENDECI (General Secretary) and Ender AKTULGA (Deputy Chairman) were elected to the Board of Directors at the General Assembly of Physics Association held on 5 December 1975. With the new associations law introduced in 1976, the board of directors under the chairmanship of Erdal İNÖNÜ made the necessary changes due to the condition that the name of the association could be found as “Turkish”, that the association's work should be accepted as a public good, and that the decision of the Council of Ministers should be made in order to cooperate with scientific associations abroad. As a result of these initiatives,

a) With the decision of the Council of Ministers published on the Official Gazette No. 15732, dated October 12, 1976, numbered 7/12434, the name "Turkish Physics Association" was accepted.
b) With the decree numbered 7/15806 of the Council of Ministers on 13 June 1977, the Turkish Physical Society was included among the associations working for the public good.
c) In accordance with the decision of the Council of Ministers dated February 5, 1979 and numbered 7/1726, it allowed the Turkish Physical Society to cooperate with the European Physical Society (EPS).

Between the years 1976-1987, during the Presidency of Erdal INÖNÜ's Turkish Physics Association, the meetings of the previous administration's communications at Istanbul University continued for several years, some meetings were held in other universities, and interest was established in some cities outside Istanbul and 8 times TFD Physics He made congresses to be held. The first issue of “CONTEMPORARY PHYSICAL JOURNAL” was published in the first May of 1976 and continued to be published periodically with this understanding, which is thought to be a continuous publication organ that will communicate with the members of the association and inform the developments in physics in the world and in the country. In addition, the 5th Physics Congress of the European Physics Association (EPS) was organized between 7-11 September 1981 at Boğaziçi University, organized open sessions, panels and formed groups to examine some social issues and prepare reports. During the 11-year TFD Presidency of Erdal İNÖNÜ, important scientific activities and administrative structures were carried out and the chairmanship of the board of directors ended in February 1987. (Erdal İNÖNÜ was taken from his speech at TFD-19 Physics Congress.)

In the Ordinary General Assembly of the Turkish Physics Association held in 1987, K. Gediz AKDENİZ was elected as the Chairman of the Board of Directors. K. Gediz AKDENİZ, who was the Chairman of the TFD Board between 1987-1997, opened a branch in Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir in 1995 in order to reach all physicists living in various regions of the country and to spread the studies across the country. In addition, he organized TFD Physics Congresses, TFD International Physics Summer Schools 8 times in the 10-year period between 1987-1997 and hosted the organization of European and Balkan Physics Students Congresses in 3 times by establishing the Student Commission in 1992. Contemporary Physics Journal, which the previous administration started publishing, was able to publish 3 issues during this administration. K. Gediz AKDENİZ, after the contacts and studies he made with the Balkan Physics Union, received the approval of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Turkey and made TFD a member of the Balkan Physics Union in Bucharest in 1987, and he continued his duty until 1997 in the Balkan Physics Union. Boğaziçi University, which was organized by the Balkan Physics Congresses in Thessaloniki (1991), İzmir (1994) and Cluj-Napoca (1997) and was periodically directed by Metin ARIK. - With the important support of Balkan International Center for Applied Physics Research and the devoted contributions of editor Emine RIZAOĞLU, she published her first issue in 1992 and started her publication life.
